Would You Let Someone Else Say That to You Without Feeling Awful?

I often ask clients : would you let someone else say that to you without feeling awful? I’m referring to self-talk and how truly brutal you can be with yourself.

The harshness of self-talk has to be treated with a strong resolve to stop it.

It isn’t easy to stop the voice in your head, but with some planning and practice you can soften the tone and learn inner kindness.

If someone actually spoke to you the way your inner voice does, you wouldn’t want to be around them. In fact, you might let them know you don’t want to be around them in strong terms. Think about this.

The first step involves paying attention to what and how you speak to yourself.

The second step is to get into it. Really feel how this is directing your decisions and attitude.

The third step is to practice saying things in a more effective and gentle way. You will want to have a journal to write down your contrasting statements.

Don’t spend time thinking about where the negative self-talk came from. Concentrate on changing it and learning to be kind to yourself as you would be to a friend in need.
