Try to Observe Specific Thoughts Within the Chaos of Your Busy Mind

Clients come to me with a desire to quiet their minds. Often they complain that the noise in their head is getting in the way of focusing on what they want to accomplish.

I suggest they try to identify and look at a specific thought within the chaos of their busy minds.

How to do this?

  1. Use a relaxation technique such as paying attention to the breath.
  2. Be sure not to resist the chaos and name it: noise.
  3. Remind yourself that you are not your mind. It is no more you than your foot is.
  4. Catch a thought and write it down. Can you catch a few more?
  5. Be willing to experiment by using calmness and then by doing the opposite.
  6. Try getting up from your chair and do something that resembles jumping jacks. Get your blood flowing for just 5 minutes and see if you can observe specific thought patterns.
  7. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself like you would treat an honored guest.
  8. Be unattached to the results!
