Managing the Pictures You Make in Your Mind

It’s basic to NLP that you hold visual images of events, people and anything you can think of in your mind. Taking the knowledge a step further includes managing the pictures you make in your mind.

Clients come to me because they feel stuck. Stuck in just one area of their lives or a general feeling that keeps them unable to function.

I have them work on being aware of their visual abilities and being able to describe the pictures they create under various circumstances. Once they have this awareness, they can learn to alter the pictures. Altering the pictures can alter their self-perception.

Try this:

  1. Breathe in and out with awareness of the breath.
  2. Relax your body by sitting comfortably.
  3. Picture something simple.
  4. Notice all the distinctions, the details.
  5. Once you’ve exhausted your attention to this, begin to change the image.
  6. Change it by making it larger or smaller.
  7. Change it by making it brighter or darker.
  8. Change it by adding something to it.
  9. Try changing the image on your own.
  10. Once you learn this technique, you can manage the images you create that are unresourceful.
  11. By practicing with something simple, you can become very good at making changes.
