NLP Portland, Oregon: 8 Steps toward Self-Control

Consider the 8 steps toward self-control as a beginning. You may realize  there are refinements you want to make to each step. Take the time to write the steps down along with the refinements you have in mind.

  1. Be in a quiet place where you can give your full attention to the steps.
  2. Take in a breath from your nose, count to 4 and release the breath to the count of 8. Do this 3 times.
  3. Think of a time, a place or event where you felt great. Close your eyes and see this in vivid detail, bringing to mind what you saw, heard and felt.
  4. Go ahead and ‘be’ in the memory so that you can feel as if it’s happening right now. You can make the feeling of it stronger by exaggerating the colors; making them brighter and richer.
  5. Be aware of how you feel while residing in this clear memory. Where do you feel this in your body? Pay attention, this is useful information.
  6. Once you’ve discovered and defined where it resides in your body, focus on this entirely.
  7. Now take this experience, particularly the sense of it in your body and imagine a time in the future when you might benefit from these feelings.
  8. Just by thinking about the future and practicing the feeling of a happy time you’ll feel the self-control you have over your emotions.
