Do You Feel Like I Do?:
The False Consensus Effect

When clients come to me for help with focus or confidence I ask them if someone in their lives suggested they ‘get help’ with the issue. It’s an important question and their answers are not predictable.

Why is it important to talk about what others think about your behavior or condition? Because it may be that it’s merely their point of view that you have a ‘problem’ and it may not be an issue at all for you.

The False Consensus Effect is a concept I was made aware of by reading Ellen Langer. She points out that we presume that our own behavior makes sense and that any well-adjusted person would act in a similar way. We don’t naturally realize that others see things their own way.

The false consensus effect is at play, for example, when someone tells you that you’re scattered, unfocused. However, they have their own definition of focused and scattered and can’t possibly be objective about you.

Consider that when people say ‘most people’…they are using the false consensus effect to bolster their point of view. Most people are happy.

Self –hypnosis can help you find those areas where you are imposing the false consensus effect in your life and how you can re-evaluate your perspective.

  1. I have been searching on line around 3 hours today, but I never uncovered any interesting article such as yours. It is really worth enough for me. Personally, if all website owners and blog owners made very good content as you did, the online will be a lot more beneficial than ever before.

  2. I praise you for the excellent publishing! My spouse and i genuinely loved looking through the site, you’re an outstanding publisher.
