Placebos and Nocebos and The Power of Suggestion
Placebos and Nocebos and The Power of Suggestion
Placebo effects can arise from :
- A conscious belief in a drug
- Unconscious associations between recovery and the experience of being treated—
- As a result of the pinch of a shot
- Seeing a doctor’s white coat.
Unconscious conditioning can control bodily processes, such as immune responses and the release of hormones.
Do you have a friend who has reported ‘getting better’ after seeing the doctor even though the doctor didn’t do a thing? Or feeling much better on the way to the doctor’s office?
- The word placebo literally means “I will please” in Latin.
- The first known double-blind placebo-controlled trial was done in 1907.
- The FDA doesn’t require that a drug study include a placebo control group, however, the placebo-controlled trial has long been the standard.
- The NIH is funding several studies related to the placebo effect.
A Nocebo is the suggestion from a person of authority that has a negative effect on your health and well-being. It has the reverse effect of the placebo.
