The smaller the steps you take toward a goal, the more opportunity there is for new information to come in and enhance the process.

It seems part of the human condition to default to negative thoughts. So, a complementary part of praising yourself is to notice the negative thoughts and convert them into something positive. Easy to do once you get in the habit, and eventually makes it easier to default to positive thoughts.
