Help With Pain Relief
There are lots of non-medicinal ways to help yourself when you feel pain.
Here are a few ideas:
- Instead of holding your body in a rigid way ‘against’ the pain, try relaxing and discovering a way to soften toward it. I know this isn’t easy, but with practice, you can make a difference. Tensing the body creates more problems including exhausting you.
- Try to change your focus. Get busy doing something that requires your attention, or takes your full concentration and you will feel better. This distraction is helpful to change focus and to learn that you have more control than you think you do.
- Do not bother to talk with others about pain unless they’re in a position to help you. Make this a rule and you’ll feel better. It’s natural to want sympathy but you may have noticed that people tend to avoid complainers.
- Make it a firm rule to avoid becoming too isolated. Make plans to get out there and stick to them. People will be accepting of your difficulty if they see you are trying. You might hear them talk about you as ‘strong’ and ‘brave’. Better to be called these things than to suffer loneliness.
Self-hypnosis techniques are very helpful toward pain control.
