Directions for Change When You Lose Your Way

You may need directions for change when you lose your way. Clients who come to me for help with self control often find it helpful to review the process of making changes.

In order to make changes and have the energy for self control try this:

  1. Breathe in to the count of 8, hold for 8 and exhale to your internal count of 16.
  2. Repeat 3 times.
  3. Be aware of feeling more relaxed. Make sure you’re comfortable.
  4. Be clear over what you want.
  5. Be specific. If you want to change sleeping habits, say:” I will set my alarm for 8 tomorrow morning’, rather than: “ I want to get up earlier tomorrow morning” Simplistic but these are the directions.
  6. Be clear, specific and have a mental picture of setting the alarm or arising at 8.
  7. Recall a time when you were very excited over an accomplishment.
  8. Notice every detail of what it was and how it looked and felt.
  9. Feel the experience now. Where in your body do you feel it?
  10. Identify this place in your body and practice feeling great about the past accomplishment.
  11. Finally, apply this great feeling toward your desire to change your sleeping habits.
