When clients come for help to stop smoking I spend time talking to them about their particular situation so that during the traditional hypnosis session I can use words and phrases that they normally use which in turn triggers the unconscious mind to pay attention and takes them seriously.

Self-hypnosis is a very helpful add-on to the traditional hypnosis and I recommend you make a recording as specified below to listen to every day or night.

Try these suggestions:

  1. I see myself smoking while pretending I’m a fly on the wall and I watch the smoke being sucked into my mouth and nose.
  2. I then see it burn its way to the back of my throat and down the trachea, irritating all the tissues which have been kept in a constant state of abrasion, soreness and damage.
  3. I continue to watch as the tar, nicotine and chemicals burn their way into my lungs, singeing the cilia, the bronchial tubes. I see my lungs are discolored from the smoking.
  4. I am a loving, kind person and I treat myself with loving kindness in all ways but this.
  5. Smoking is an addiction and I know I have the strength and desire to thoroughly clear the addiction by making it a priority.
  6. Breathing in and out 5 times , saying to myself, ‘health first’ with every inhale and exhale gets me through the brain desiring the nicotine.
  7. I recall a time in my life when I no longer wanted to continue with a habit; this memory supports my decision to stop smoking now and forever.
  8. From this moment on I am no longer a smoker. If someone offers me a cigarette I say, no thank you, I’m no longer a smoker.
  9. I am strong, healthy and decisive and I have made up my mind to increase my health.
  10. Smoking is in the past.

Repetition is important to the success of hypnosis and self-hypnosis as you may change your mind now and then and repetition of the suggestions will convince your unconscious that you are serious.

It’s important to quiet the conscious mind in order to allow the unconscious mind to learn the suggestions given it . The very first thing to do when learning and implementing self-hypnosis is to develop an effective relaxation process works easily and quickly for you.

I recommend you learn this:

  • Breathe in to the count of 8, hold for 8 and exhale to the count of 16. The exhale is most important. Repeat 3 times and feel the comfort and relaxation.
  • If you need to relax even more to quiet your conscious mind, imagine a healing light entering through your toes and relaxing every muscle all the way to the top of your head. Be sure to do this slowly and thoroughly.

Make a recording:

  • When you record the above, speak normally and don’t let little mistakes stop you.
  • The idea is to have the recording for use on a daily basis to provide repetition of your suggestions.
  • Ideally, you’ll create and record your own suggestions.
